The problem

The U.S. Web Design System exists so that government sites are consistent, accessible and recognisable. Drupal has its own firm opinions about markup and layout. Neither was written with the other in mind, and most of the difficulty in a USWDS-on-Drupal build is in the space between them.

The work

Translated Figma designs into production components against USWDS, and served as the technical reference for responsiveness and mobile behaviour across the portal.

The engineering was modular layouts that satisfy the design system's markup and accessibility conventions while still rendering through Drupal core's layout engine — so that a component keeps its compliance properties no matter which template it is dropped into, rather than each page being brought into line by hand.
